Since transparency is very important to us, and since the Connection Revolution is not only a world-changing movement but also a business (here’s why), we wanted to talk openly about the business side of things, and what part it played in the change from the Freak Revolution to the Connection Revolution.
The Profit Pie
Here’s the breakdown of how much profit we made (net, not gross) in January through September of 2010.

- Affiliate is money we made from promoting other people’s products using affiliate links.
- UE is the ongoing profit from our first book, The Usual Error, both the tree book and the audiobook.
- 52WtA is 52 Weeks to Awesome.
- Coaching is coaching.
- WCWW is the World-Changing Writing Workshop.
- (This pie doesn’t include Engaging eCourses, but if it did, it’d be a slice roughly half the size of 52WtA.)
As you can see, the World-Changing Writing Workshop completely dwarfed all our other income streams. It was a no-brainer to make it an annual event.
The Helping Pie
But of course, making money isn’t our #1 priority, changing the world is. What would the pie look like if it showed how much our various projects have helped people and made the world a better place?
It’s much harder to measure, but from the feedback we’ve gotten from people saying we’ve changed their lives or helped them in some way, I think it would look something like this:

It’s more colorful, because we included our free projects as well:
- Blogging is our blog plus guest posts we’ve written.
- Manifesto is our manifesto, newly rewritten as The Connection Manifesto.
What I read from the helping pie is “Keep up the good work! Keep up the good profitable work and keep up the good free work, too!”
…except for two areas: coaching and affiliate promotions. Those two are tiny slices in both the helping pie and the profit pie, so we decided to make some changes.
Kyeli talked about the coaching changes yesterday, so today I’ll talk about the affiliate change.
Our new policy on promoting other people’s stuff
From here on out, we’ll be very selective about promoting other people’s products and services — about one per quarter tops, limited to things that we not only think are awesome, but have actually used and loved.
For our readers, this will mean a whole lot fewer blurbs of the form
“Our friend Jane has an awesome new product launching this week, check it out! (affiliate link)”
Instead, if we’re going to say anything, we’ll say
“Our friend Jane is amazing, and here’s why. (direct link)”
We’ll tell you who we think is awesome and worth your time, not what we think is awesome and worth your time (and money).
In my experience, most social media recommendations of products are really recommendations of people anyway, so let’s all be honest about it.
For our friends who would like to us to help them promote their awesome stuff, this means one of two things.
Option 1: You can tell us about your thing well in advance so we can consider buying it, using it, and giving it one of our rare review spots.
Option 2: You can just be awesome, provide useful free stuff that we’ll happily link to, tell us about it, then tell people about your paid products (in a non-annoying way) on your own site. That’s a win/win/win for us, for you, and for our readers.
Decluttering
In keeping with our new policy, we’ve decluttered our sidebar. We’ve removed the ads for other people’s products, and put our own products in our beautiful new store. Hardly anyone ever clicked on them, and the new design communicates our values more clearly.
That’s important, because so many people are mistrustful of businesses. They feel that all businesses only care about making money, consequences be damned. I admit, when starting out on my entrepreneurial journey, I was hard pressed to find successful entrepreneurs whose goals and ethics I could wholeheartedly support.
If you can’t find a good role model, become your own role model.
Dabbling in Metabusiness
We’ve always been adamant that we wouldn’t sell anything related to business until we’d been decently successful in business. It just seems too circular, like those make money online scams that claim to teach you how to make a million dollars, and the answer is “trick a bunch of people into thinking that you can teach them how to make a million dollars.” Blech.
Since the World-Changing Writing Workshop, we have become decently successful in business, so we’ve got two small-business-related projects in the works: one about collaboration, called Business Buddies, and a big one called Profitable Idealism. But don’t worry, we’re not going to become yet another site focused on entrepreneurship. Our focus has been and will continue to be on changing the world through connection.
Entrepreneurship is one way to do that, but it’s not the only way, and it won’t become our only way.
There are plenty of other ways to change the world: writing, communication, motivating others, and connecting with yourself, just to name a few.
We are the knights who say “niche!”
One of the reasons we decided on the Freak Revolution in the first place was the prevailing business advice that you’ve got to have a niche.
There are probably plenty of people who will say we’re crazy for switching from a tasty niche like “freak” to an inchoately vague niche like “connection”.
We’ll see. (:
A daring rescue at the last minute!
Our lovely Web Elf, Rachael E.C. Acklin, came down with a nasty case of the flu right before launch. Despite impossible odds, she managed to finish this beautiful new website before the day of unveiling, while somehow managing to take good care of herself in the process.
Yay, Rachael! *hugs*
The survey
When we peeked at the initial results of our “Who are you?” survey a few hours after we sent it out, there were only 16% freaks. Later, it went up to 44%, but I feel like the 16% happened for a reason, because we needed that wake-up call to really think about what revolution we’re leading.

Also, 74% spiritual and only 6% religious? Yeah, you’re in the right place. (:
Spirituality
That brings us to our shift to include more spirituality in everything we do.
We rewrote our manifesto to rephrase “the Infinite” to “Spirit” or “the Divine”. We originally wrote “the Infinite” because we were trying to use a term that wouldn’t offend anyone. We were afraid.
We’re still afraid, but we’re opening up anyway.
We’re not sure exactly how we’ll make spirituality a part of our business yet (other than its notable presence in the upper-right of our website) but we’ll listen to our hearts.
I know they will lead us true.

I love graphs. Especially pretty pie graphs in pretty colors!
Thank you for being so transparent. It’s a big deal to do this, and it makes me feel more brave. :)
Thank you, Rachael!

This is why I admire you.

Ha! This comment makes me ridiculously happy. *big grin*
The reference to Monty Python really made me laugh. Thank you =)
“But don’t worry, we’re not going to become yet another site focused on entrepreneurship. ”
And this is why I love you guys because, frankly, hasn’t there been enough? Just doing research on Entrepreneur.com or QuestionTheRules.com is enough for me. I am so tired of these blogs that do nothing but teach you how to make money blogging, by teaching people to make money blogging, by teaching people to make money blogging.
I have a few “gu-boos” that I avoid with a passion and it saddened me earlier this year when some of my mentors decided to jump on their nepotism/snakeoil/barely legal bandwagons. I feel that as time grows, more businesses will fall by the wayside because they have been established on fluff rather than connection.
And that’s where the connection revolution is going to succeed. Because, as you said, businesses are about people. If you like people, you’ll buy from them them – if they suck you’ll look the other way.
I have to admit I am sad to see the forum go – not because of what it was but because of what it represented. From the outside I look completely non-freak – maybe freak is a state of mind rather than an outside appearance. Because it’s freaky to talk about spirituality, connection, relationships and success – because nobody else does it. Because they are afraid that they’ll lose friends, business, etc.
Sorry for the ramble – but that’s how I see this evolution – it’s still freak at heart, but it’s more inclusive. And I am excited to see where it takes you guys!

Thanks, Courtney! I appreciate what you wrote, and I know what you mean. I have just one question:
Who do you avoid with a passion? I’d like to know (and why) so that I won’t walk blindly into their snares. I bet oodles of others would, too.
The strong social taboo against ever saying anything negative is a big part of why these people can continue their snakeoil sales. (Kind of analogous to the stigma against saying “This person abused me” or “This person raped me”, the person has an easier time finding their next victim if their reputation is untarnished.)
I know it’s hard to be the one to break that social taboo, though, so if you’re not comfortable sharing your opinions and experiences publicly, I’d still appreciate it if you’d let me know privately.
Thanks!
I think a lot of my experience is from being “behind the scenes” for a lot of marketers that come from the Warrior Forum crowd and participate in big launches. Being a ghostwriter you get to see a lot of the dark underbelly. The vast majority of them rip one another off and provide no real value. I’ll definitely let you know privately of a few individuals that are on my personal list.
I would say that before anyone buys anything from anyone about making money online, establishing yourself, using social media, etc – that they read, read, read – blogs, free reports, basic books on marketing (both old school and new) and then ask themselves “What am I really going to get out of this? What is the seller getting out of this?” – In a lot of cases, the seller is getting more than the buyer is getting.
Anyway, that being said – I am so excited for your future products. They sound fresh, valuable and REAL – no snakeoil for miles to see. :)

Thank you, Courtney.
Our snakes are very dry. (:
Thank you!!
I had been starting to feel that I had no place writing a blog if I wasn’t going to turn it into a way to make money. A lot of those I respect have made businesses doing the blogging for money and pumping out ecourses and webinars and all sorts of products… for the purpose of helping other people do the same. But… I have never felt a particular calling or need to run a business!! All blogs turned to “I’m going to teach you to do X” instead of just being about the connection between humans across the miles.
I started blogging because I was lonely! I wanted connection, I wanted friends, I wanted to know I wasn’t alone and that I was worth talking to… not becuase I wanted to be a business coach or sell crafts out of my living room… (although its all fine and well if that is what someone DOES want to do).
I have slowly started to avoid a lot of blogs that just talk about their products and what they can do for me to earn money blogging… while I wouldn’t mind earning money, my primary goal is to feel like I matter in the world.

Right!
And I know we won’t be able to make every single blog post or project 100% relevant to our readers, but at least we’ll have enough of a mix to appeal to all our right people. (:
Ok, here’s a hint… :) I just read the words: “female spiritual weird awesome nonconformist writer geek revolutionary” and teared up a little.
Love!

Profitable Idealism? That made my ears perk up!
Seriously, this was a great look into your inner workings, and though I’ve been on board with the Freak Revolution from day 1, I’m even more excited about being a part of the Connection Revolution. You guys rock!

“female spiritual weird awesome nonconformist writer geek revolutionary” <— that's me exactly!
I LOVE the new direction you're taking. Great work, sweethearts.
Thank you for sharing the data, it is absolutely fascinating.
Thank you, too, for standing firmly on the side of honesty. And integrity. And taking the long view.
The curtain part you are sharing here is just icing on the cake — you have done such a great job with the freak-revolution it is hard to imagine improvements, but I think you have nailed it with this.
Congratulations on the new!!!!

I’m really looking forward to your business projects and the new direction of the website all together :) I’ve been pondering a lot about spirituality and ethics and businesses myself lately, so this is great for me.

Hey, Pace and Kyeli!
I’m stunned. Not in a bad way, like “What the heck?” In a good way, like “Wow! How did they know exactly the kinds of things that have been missing and holding me back?!??”
I’m one of the people who’s been so frustrated with the examples on the ‘net of businesses run without Spirit and idealism. I have wanted to start a website for some time now, b ut have kept studying and not “taken the leap” because most of the incentive is to make money. When I share that my motivation is to help people, I’m told I have the wrong focus, and that if I “have no product” or stick with my “unresearched niche,” my website will flop.
My “product” IS helping people change their lives, and I find your evolving Freak Revolution to Connection Revolution the kind of Spirit-based, heart-led example I’ve been lacking.
Thank you so much, both of you, for your presence on the ‘net as someone who inspires me, and role models I can be proud of following.
Annie
Whoa.
Somehow it never dawned on me that by becoming my own role model, I would also become a role model for others.
Guess we’d better do a good job then, eh? (:
No pressure. :D
I’m as certain as I can be that, so long as you two continue to stay true to yourselves on your current path, you’ll succeed in what you’re called to do, and to BE. (I try not to tempt fate by being TOTALLY certain about anything.)
It’s the BE-ing that inspires me. You’ve proven you’re both good at BE-ing Who You Really Are since I’ve been here.
In other words, you’ve both been inspirational role models all along! ;)
Annie
I’m presently making the same discovery: was my own role model in junior high, am now role model for middle school cherubs (even though, god knows, I still don’t understand middle school kids any more now than then…).
I’m glad for the decluttering because I have problems if there’s extra stuff in my visual field that’s not what I’m trying to concentrate on. (At least you didn’t have much in the way of animations — one website I was at frequently was running an ad for awhile that had a falling tree, and it got to where I’d have to close my eyes for that part of the ad or get dizzy. Looking at 30 articles in one sitting, having to close my eyes or get dizzy, got old *very* quickly.)
As far as your niche goes — connection is going to, well, *connect* with more people than “freak”. And it’s a lot more inclusive! (I consider myself to be a freak, but I’m big on inclusiveness — more so than many of the non-freaky people I’ve known over the course of my life.)
And the change from “the Infinite”? “The Infinite” was done out of fear? I’m glad you moved away from fear dictating your choices. (Although I’m fond of “the Infinite” just because of the sort of geek I am.)
I’m excited to be watching this change unfold. It’s resonating well with me, but more importantly, from what I’m reading from y’all, it’s resonating well with *y’all*.
I totally love the fact that you had the same number of respondents who identified as “some gender other than male or female” as “vegan”. That made me smile irrationally. :)

Hi Pace and Kyeli,
Just found your site after perusing the ishmael site and I must say I am intrigued. After reading several blog posts, I noticed this one in particular because of the spiritual aspect. You see, I am a former Baptist pastor and have been blogging about my “evolution” for over a year. I noted this quote: “We’re not sure exactly how we’ll make spirituality a part of our business yet…” and would be pleased if you would have a look at my site. I would be more than happy to share with you some ideas I have had.
Please note that if you read my blog, my primary audience consists of former church members (therefore, Christians) so I use the language with which they will most identify (Christian themes, metaphors, motifs). Also, my story is interwoven within the posts so it helps to start at the beginning (http://emptyyourself.wordpress.com/2009/04/05/shut-up/).
Also note that I have no interest in converting anyone to any particular belief system and completely agree with the prime directive that “there is no one right way,” as you will see if you read enough of my posts ;). Looking forward to hearing your feedback and being of service if you feel I can! Peace!
.-= Jef Tobias´s last blog ..Two Approaches =-.
Thanks, Jef! Your evolution seems somewhat similar to ours, despite the fact that we each started out from very different places.
It’s neat how that happens. (:
I like you better than the Huffington Post already. I found you by Googling “Why politics is a waste of time”. After Obama proved that to be true, and after I worked so hard to help get him elected, I decided I needed another approach. I see a lot of good thinking in your manifesto and you are great writers and I hope to learn more.
Thank you, Mark. Thanks for reading, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on how best to change the world!
