To you, to connect to someone means to be close to them. Even if you aren't connected to someone, though, you'd never hurt them. You'd never cause them pain, intentionally or otherwise. So many people in this world, if they aren't actively connected to someone (and sometimes even when they are!) they don't show them any consideration, let alone kindness. I think getting the world to shift to a connection paradigm has a first step of getting the world to at least treat each other with basic decency. Maybe if we all had healthy boundaries and thought "you are not a good person to allow in my life, so I will refuse to open myself up to you" we'd also have the boundaries of "You are different than me, and so I won't necessarily make you part of my immediate world, but I will not harm you either." Wouldn't that be nice? Connection isn't the same as assimilation, and you just made me realize that. You’re also just such a good person. To you, to connect to someone means to be close to them.
