I know it often comes down to conflict avoidance for me. Usually with family members (or boyfriend's family members). Or in "social settings" where the expectation is that you'll be prim and polished and proper and polite. Thank goodness for all the places where we can be real! I think there may be another side to the "fear that others won't love me as I truly am" and that's "I know that I may not be safe." Perhaps that comes around to your honesty and openness scales. That when it's not safe (or even not comfortable), you can be honest without being open. Challenging post. I know it often comes down to conflict avoidance for me. I realized I do this all the time. It's really silly to lie period. In the end I've figured out that I'm not really avoiding conflict, because the lying causes a big conflict in my soul. Being honest can lead to a better conversation and learning something I didn't know before. So in October I was just 100% honest with a friend of mine, about how I really felt about her boyfriend, and she emailed me last night to say we are no longer friends. And it makes me really sad, because she is a lovely person, and I love her, but if she can't handle 100% honesty, then I suppose friendship isn't in the cards for us. Thank you for posting this.
