We sat down in a cafe and thought of all the things that were most important to us in our relationship. We went through the table of contents of The Usual Error to jog our memories and speed up the process. We kept writing things down until we felt like we were done. Then we went back and reworded them.

There wasn’t anything more complicated than that — these vows were more a reflection of how we already treat each other, so it was more “let’s write down what we already do and make it official” than coming up with new things from scratch.
